Agenda Item Summary: In order to meet the critical needs of students and school communities, student support teams (SST) will receive additional enhancements. First, they are being provided with curricular materials and training on a variety of research and evidence-based programs that target specific skill areas. This will allow SST members to engage in interventions at the Tier 2 and Tier 3 level with targeted students through the framework of the ACPS multi-tiered systems of support (MTSS). Further, through the use of ESSER funds as well as community partnerships, additional social, emotional, behavioral, health, and wellness personnel are being added to increase ACPS’ ability to provide direct services to students.
Background: As ACPS has opened its doors to a full return of in-person instruction, students are returning to schools with a high level of need due to the ongoing pandemics of COVID-19 and systemic racism. These needs not only relate directly to academics, but also to increased levels of trauma, interrupted socialization, and delayed transitions from one level to another, such as from middle to high school. ACPS is again engaging in the use of the UCLA Brief COVID-19 screening tool in the Fall of 2021 in order to identify topics that need greater attention within our universal Tier 1 social-emotional curriculum, and to determine which students may be in need of more targeted Tier 2 and Tier 3 supports during the school year. These Tier 2 and 3 supports are delivered by SST within each ACPS school.
Recommendation: The Superintendent recommends that the School Board review this information.
